Trick Or Treat?

A couple of weeks ago I asked a neighbour if she would help me organise a small trick or treat event with a couple of the other neighbours, Halloween is not a Japanese tradition (although it is becoming more popular). I imagined just a couple of families joining in, we ended up with nearly every family on the street that has kids and a couple of families from the next block. Only one family on our street missed the fun, the kids are in daycare their parents don't get back in time for them to join.
Ebi-kun decided this time he wanted to be a mummy....
He looked great to start with, but as time went on, his bandages started falling of! Of course, it was the first time for 'Trick and Treat' for the rest of the kids but they all turned up with some kind of hat or mask, a couple actually had costumes on. One mom had made her 3 kids capes using black plastic bags, this reminded me of when I was a kid, our rubbish bags were black so Halloween costumes were almost always made with a black bin bag! It is amazing what you can make with a black bin bag :o)
The kids weren't sure what to do at first, but soon they had got then hang of shouting 'trick or treat' and then they realised that this equalled getting sweeties, so they were charging off to the next house to demand some more bootie! Once we had done all the houses we came back and played some games, one was dressing the daddy as a mummy - yes that old favourite of wrapping people up with toilet roll. There were 2 dads so guess who got wrapped? LOL. They all took it in good spirits. We finished off with 'What time is it Mrs Witch?' Which sent kids screaming down the street hahahha.
All in all, it was great fun, Ebi-kun is already planning for next years event. I have to say a big thank you to Tammy-chan for helping organise it all. Thank you!
Today we have a couple of friends over, we will play a couple of games and have a ghoulish lunch, they have no idea what they are letting themselves in for....

Continent Work

Ebi-kun has finally finished his world poster, he has been working hard on this for the last couple of weeks. We used a dinner plate for the two circles then he traced around the pieces out of the continent map and coloured them in. He labelled them all and then picked 3 pictures out of the continent folders to represent each continent.
I am pretty sure some continents have either gained or lost land! He spent an age trying to pick just the right pictures. When he was working on it, I put on some world music, it was funny listening to his comments about the music, there were one or two tracks when he would say something along the lines of 'I am glad that has finished, it was giving me a headache' LOL.

I also found this song on youtube, we checked loads of them before we found one we liked, be warned, it gets stuck in your head and you will be singing it all day Yeahh

We have got a swap group together....
Jo - Asia
Martha - South America
Rebekah - North America
Mammalisa - Europe
Chris - Australia
My Boys Teacher - Africa
Chaucey - Antarctica

and possibly a second group...
Asia - My Child's Diary
North America - Montessori Moments
Australia - Karmiec
Europe -Paumon

If you are interested and would like to join, you could choose to represent one of the missing continents for group two, they need Africa, South America and Antarctica. Leave a comment on this post along with a contact email address. Make sure you know what you are letting yourself in for by reading this post first.

Group one, I will set up something with google docs so we can easily share files etc. If you have any ideas on what to include or how to go about doing it let me know, I must admit, I hadn't really thought it all through!

A Child's Poem

I saw this on Montessori Mama today, although I have seen it before, maybe in one of the Montessori books I have, I can't remember now but I think it is worth sharing.

A Child's Plea
The poem EVERY parent should read!

Today I did my math and science.
I toasted bread, I halved and quartered, counted, measured, and used my eyes, ears and hands.
I added and subtracted on the way.
I used magnets, blocks and memory tray.
I learned about a rainbow and how to weigh.
So please don't say -

'ANYTHING IN YOUR BAG TODAY?'

You see. I'm sharing as I play, to learn to listen and speak clearly when I talk
to wait my turn and when inside to walk.
To put my words into a phrase, to find my name and write it down.
To do it with a smile and not a frown,
to put my pasting brush away. So please, don't say -

WHAT NOTHING IN YOUR BAG TODAY?'

I learned about a snail and a worm.
Remembered how to take my turn.
Helped a friend when he was stuck.
Learned that water runs off a duck.
Looked at words from left to right.
Agreed to differ, not to fight.
So please don't say -

'DID YOU ONLY PLAY TODAY?'

Yes, I played the whole day through.
I played to learn the things I do.
I speak a problem, find a clue
and work out for myself just what to do.
My teacher's set the scene, and stay near-by to help me when I really try.
They are there to pose the problems, and to help me think.
I hope they will keep me floating and never let me sink.
All of this is in my head and not in my bag. It makes me sad to hear you say -

'HAVEN'T YOU DONE ANYTHING TODAY?'

When you attend your meeting today and do your work I will remember not to say to you -

'WHAT NOTHING IN YOUR BAG? WHAT DID YOU DO?'

Halloween printables

Last year I made some printables and posted them on flickr, how I used them is here and you can download them here.
I also made a sheet for food labels this year, you can find it here.

I am not a happy bunny, I made a new softie last night, and almost finished the second one when my sewing machine decided to throw a fit, no idea what is wrong, I fear that it has to go back to the shop - I hope it doesn't need another month there AGGGHhhhhhhh just what I need just before Christmas.

Halloween Playgroup Party

We are lucky to have a good network of friends with bilingual kids, we managed to get most of them to sit still long enough to have a group photo, this is before the party actually kicked off so they are looking pretty grumpy! That soon changed after a game of eye and spoon then what time is it Mr Monster!

Talking of monsters, well zombies....here is Mr Ebi looking stunning, yes, that is a combination of toilet roll and bandages, we ran out of bandages half way through so we popped into the drug store on the way, highly amusing!
Ebi-kun wanted to wear his knight outfit, one of the days had a chat with him...
Dad - so, is this your armour?
Ebi-kun - yes, it's a knights armour
Dad - so is this chainmail?
Ebi-kun - no! it's polyester

hahahahaaa, yes, my kid knows his fabrics :o)

Eyeball anyone?

How to make yourself a load of eyeballs...

you will need:
Eggs, hard boiled, cooled and peeled
paper cases
food colour, blue, black and red
mayo
clean fine tipped paintbrush

Cut you eggs in half and place into the paper cases.
Squirt a ring of mayo around the base of the egg. Then using the paint brush, paint circles onto the top of the egg. Make sure the egg is dry - dab it with a kitchen towel if you are not sure, if it is not dry the dye will run.

Next, use the red to paint of the veins, I found that starting at the bottom worked best. Also dab a bit of red colour along the mayo.
Final touches, use the black to paint in the pupil and a thin black line around the iris, you can add flecks or blue to the iris too if you like.
YUM

Halloween Finger Food

We had our playgroup Halloween party on Saturday. One of the members organised it at their home, well the park in front of their house and talked some of the neighbours into doing the treat and treat bit for the kids. It was great fun, sadly I didn't get many pictures since the battery ran out on my camera. Ebi-kun loved it and wanted to do it all again the next day.
When we have playgroup events, it is usually a potluck party which is great because we get such a mixture of foods. I did forewarn everyone that I would be taking fingers and eyeballs but so many people told me that they thought I was joking - as if I would joke about such a thing ! So, just in case your supermarket is all out of fingers, here is a quick tutorial or is it a recipe? to make your own.

You will need:
weiner sausages, I like the mini ones, they look more like tender kids fingers rather than grizzly adult ones.
White onion
Ketchup

Cut a small section off the top of the weiner, this is where the nail will go

Then make 3 small cuts half way down, this will be the knuckle
Cut the onion into thick slices, the cut the slices into slightly triangular pieces, pop the onion and weiners into boiling water for a few minutes. As they boil the fingers will bend slightly.
Dip the bottom of the sausage in the ketchup, then put a little ketchup on the weiner where the nail with go, add a piece of onion and you are done!
Last year I used yellow pepper for the nails, the onion was easier. You could use green pepper for monster fingers. Enjoy!
These disappeared really quickly at the party, a big hit, next up.... EYEBALLS

What we have been doing....

A general round up of some of the things we have been up to. Road chalk has to be the number 1 summer 'toy' this year, the front of our house is constantly covered with doodles and pictures, scribbles and maths! He asks me to make up sums for him then he uses some stones from the garden to help calculate the answers. I make the numbers simple because we haven't covered carrying over yet.
He has been busy making a continent poster, it is almost finished, we will probably finish the last bit today (especially since we are going to be housebound, the weather is awful).
Parts of a frog, he has recently taken to getting out the animal/plant puzzles again, I can see some extension work coming up soon with those.
An oldie but a goodie, I'm not sure how much longer this cube is going to hold up. He often gets frustrated doing this work but the last few times he has stuck with it until he has got all the marbles on the tees.
And like every kid, we have been collecting acorns (and putting them in my bag, more than once I have pulled out my purse to pay for something and a pile of acorns have flown across the counter, I should change my name to Totoro). This was one of those times when I wasn't really paying attention to what he was asking, the conversation went something like this...

Ebi-kun: Mommy, trees are made of wood aren't they?
Me: yes
Ebi-kun:acorns come from trees don't they?
Me: yes
Ebi-kun: you need wood glue, the one in the yellow bottle to stick wood don't you?
Me: yes

10 minutes later I went to see what he was doing, he had got out the wood glue and was sticking the hats back onto the acorns and drawing faces on them! At least he hadn't decided to stick them to his chair or something.
We are still in need of Australasia, South America and Africa swap partners, sign up to join the fun.

Continent swap

The last couple of weeks Ebi-kun has been working on continents - more of that later. Anyway, it got me thinking, it would be fun do do a Flat Stanley type of swap. I have recently been asked to help with a Flat Stanley project which we will do but I would like to do another project too.
This is the idea....
We have a group of people, one from each continent. I will supply a child template, you print out and decorate the doll either in traditional costume or your everyday dress. You need to do 7 of these (one for each participant). Then you need to include the following:
  • A day in the life of...(name of your doll) a photo story
  • Favourite foods of.... and include a simple recipe
  • Favourite festival of.... describe what happens, include anything you think relevant
  • The religion of.... basic info about your religion, if you are not religious include info about your countries major religion
  • The home of.... include some pictures of the house and the are you live in, where you go shopping, play etc.
You can then include anything else you fancy.
Make up 7 packs, one for yourself and 6 to send. Obviously we won't have anyone in Antarctica so I am hoping someone will volunteer to do Antarctica - and pretend to be a research scientist.

It is quite a big project so please only sign up if you are prepared to commit 100%. I imagine it will take quite a while to get everything together so the mailing date will be the end of November. What do you think? Interested. If so, leave a comment with a contact email and which continent you live in (or if you want to do Antarctica). It will be first come, first served. I will do Asia, so we need the other continents please.

Right, now I have to go and sort out my eyeballs and severed fingers for the playgroup Halloween party....

water

You are probably wonder why I have posted a picture of my toilet on the blog, well the topic for That Little Bit Greener this week is water. I think the Japanese have a great idea with their toilets and would like to share with you! For starters it has a two way flush, big one for number two's and a quick little flush for when you have had a tinkle. Now, when you flush the toilet, the water in the tank washes your business away and the fresh water comes through a tap at the top, which means you can wash your hands and the water you use doesn't get wasted, it goes into the tank for the next flush - BRILLIANT. It also gets rid of the need of those ridiculous teenie weenie sinks that you have to have in new restrooms.
This loo came as standard with the house and has a bidet and heated seat, I can live without it but hubby likes it. We do, however only turn it on when we want to use it, I know many people leave it on 24/7.
Another great thing is the way to take a bath, I wrote posts on this a while back parts one and two. Basically, the bath water is fairly clean when the family is done with it so we use a special pump that pumps the water into the top loading washing machine, so the bath water is used for the first two cycles, fresh water is used for the rinse. The washing machine also weighs how much is in the load and uses the appropriate amount of water for the load. Clever stuff.
I think my biggest waste of water is the way that I wash up, I tend to have the tap running so I am going to try and change that.
On a web group I belong to someone posted a link to 100 water saving tips, as I read through it, I would say about 75% wasn't relevant to our lifestyle, a lot was to save water when maintaining your pool and watering the lawn, neither of which we have. I think the best tip was to put food colour in your toilet tank and see if any of it ends up in the bowl (without flushing) if so, you have a leak.
For those in Japan, we used to have one of those heated water pots, the type you leave on all day. I wanted to get rid of it because I don't drink many hot drinks through the day, maybe two, so it didn't make sense to use it and if you try and use it like a kettle, well, it takes forever to boil. So, I bugged hubby until he decided to 'research' (can't buy anything without research) anyway, he discovered that the water pots use as much electricity as a standard fridge! Needless to say, he was down the shops in a flash and I now have a lovely Tefal kettle.
So, over to you, what are your water saving tips? Pop over to TLBG to see what everyone else does.

Reading - can you help?

Ebi-kun's reading has come on so much in the last couple of months, he seemed to be on the 3 letter words, phonic type books for quite an age then suddenly he is flying. From my teaching days I have the first 5 sets of OUP's Story Tree books, he is set to start level 5 today. He is really enjoying these stories and because they are levelled and the stories are related to the previous book he can't wait to get his hands on the next book. Whatever he picks up he will attempt to read, and he is doing a pretty good job, the only downside is that his writing skills are not as good as his reading now.
We will soon be through the level 5 of story tree, probably by next week, so what I need is are some recommendations please. He is not quite up to chapter book reading yet so we could do with something to bridge between. We don't have an library with English books so it is really hard for me to judge the level of the book just by looking at them online.
Any help, much appreciated.

Halloween Scrap busters

Here are some quick and easy Halloween scrap busting ideas, Sew Mama Sew are having a whole month of scrap using ideas, I already have several bookmarked.

First up, the ghostly trick or treat bag.
You will need (this is what I used but you can make up the measurements to fit the scraps)
2x white felt 33cm x 23cm
1x black felt 33cm x 23cm
scraps of black felt for eyes
tape or ribbon for the strap.
  1. Draw a ghost shape onto one of the white pieces of felt, add a big mouth.
  2. Cut out the shape and the mouth to create a hole.
  3. Use zig-zag stitch and sew on the eyes.
  4. Use the front piece as a template and cut out ghost shapes from the other two pieces of felt.
  5. Sandwich the three pieces together, with the black in the middle. Add a few pins to hold it in place. Before you sew the edges tuck each end of the tape into the head and pin - you might want to try it on the child so you can get the right length.
  6. Use zig-zag stitch and sew all the way round the edge. Finished.
Pop the candy in the ghosts mouth - whooooooo
Spooky bean bags
You will need:
felt
small felt scraps
dried beans
  1. Cut out circles, you need two per bean bag, mine are 11cm diameter but they can be any size.
  2. Make a face, I used iron on felt but you could sew or glue the faces on. Ebi-kun designed most of ours.
  3. Place two circles together (with the face on the top, face up) Zig-zag around the edge but leave a 2" hole.
  4. Fill about 75% with beans (job for a little person) the close the hole with a bit more zig-zag.
If I have time I want to make a ghost with a big mouth to the throw the bean bags into, if don't we will be using a bucket!
Ghostie Pops
I always did these with my kids classes when I was teaching and they were always a big hit.
One company I worked for were very tight with the Halloween allowance so I used tissues instead of fabric, the fabric looks better though.

What you need:
Circle of white fabric - the radius should be just a wee bit shorter than the length of the lolly
A lolly
fabric pen (or marker)
Something to tie with, I used wool this time but in the past I have used elastic bands, string and twisty ties.
Pop your lolly (wrapper still on) into the middle of the circle, gather it together and hold it at the neck.
Tie around the neck, being ambidextrous helps here, if it is a bit tricky ask a little person to hold it for you. Then ask a little person to draw on a spooky face.
WhoooOOOOooooo
And finally, a Halloween wreath.
you will need:
a plain wreath or something the right shape to cover.
Ribbon in black and orange.
  1. Cut the ribbon into equal lengths, it will depend on how thick your wreath is so have a play around with a couple of pieces before chopping it all up.
  2. Tie the ribbon pieces and secure with a knot, repeat all the way round. This is a perfect craft to do when you are watching TV and doesn't actually take that long.

Muffin Tin Dinner(s)

Muffin Tin Monday at Her Cup Overfloweth

I completely forgot to post last weeks, so this is a catch up post. For those who are curious to know what a Muffin Tin Dinner is, it was started by Katy who then handed it over to Michelle when she moved overseas. Basically it is a meal in a muffin tin instead of a plate. I love it because it is a great way to use up any bits and bobs in the fridge and it is an easy way to give a balanced meal. It is also a great way to introduce new foods and if you have one of those kids who don't like their foods to touch it is perfect. I asked Ebi-kun why he likes MTDs and he said he likes the different themes. Win - win situation at dinner time :o)

So here we have an autumn themed MTD.
Starting with the white stuff and going clockwise - cottage cheese, simmered pumpkin, sweet potato, carrots, pasta and orange jelly in the middle.

This was last weeks, kebab them. I often make little kebabs with the cute picks I have got but this time I gave Ebi-kun the picks, The food was also the Sunday dinner leftovers, made for an interesting meal!
Top L-R roasted potatoes, roasted pepper, banana cake
Middle L-R boiled carrots, roasted chicken, gravy to dip-dip
Bottom L-R roasted pumpkin, roasted sweet potato.
It all went, he even asked for seconds.
Now this is last years Halloween tin, I have already had a request for severed fingers and eyeballs, I have been looking through Flickr and One Pretty Thing for more revolting inspiration....
Y-U-M-M-Y

And if you are looking for bento supplies, cute picks, egg mould and the such like, the info is here.

Yochien

It is that time of year in Japan where the yochiens (kindergarten) open their doors for prospective new students. We don't have a Montessori yochien anywhere near us so we wanted to find somewhere that fitted with our ideals. I know some of you might be wonder why bother sending him at all, well, the main reason is socialization. During the day there are very few kids Ebi-kuns age around to play with and next year there will be non and many of the kids in the neighbourhood that are his age have after school activities of one kind or another. Ebi-kun also needs to learn how things are done in kindy/school, things that I can't teach him because I have never been to a Japanese kindy. I will be still doing things at home with him, with a emphasis on English language, it will also give me some free time to work at my little business - something I am looking forward to. Having 2 hours of uninterrupted time at the moment is a very rare treat indeed.
My friend, who knows me quite well, recommended her kids kindy to me. It is in the grounds of a shrine and run the priest. Her kids did well there and she thought that the kindys principles would be right up my street.

The actually grounds of the yochien are really big, they have a nice big yard and lots of climbing equipment, the place is old but the equipment looks well maintained (although they would probably close it down in the UK due to the over zealous health and safety rules). There are two sandpits, one for the little kids and another where they have little wheel barrows and shovels to dig with. For rainy days there is a big hall with a stage and a large music room decked out with enough instruments so every child can play something.
There is a big emphasis on art, they have a clay room with real clay rather than play-dough, each year they have an art festival where all the kids work gets put on display and the kids are encouraged to paint on BIG pieces of paper.
We were invited to try the clay room out and have a look around the library. The library has 7000 books and the kids can check out 2 a week and there is a book club too. I had a look at the books, there was a great mixture, not just story books but books covering all kinds of topics.
In the grounds they have 2 small rice paddies where the kids learn about the cycle of rice, they also have a veg patch and various animals, including 3 peacocks and a carp pond. I think each class also has their own animal, a rabbit or the such like. There are some wooded areas, perfect for collecting acorns and catching bugs - kid heaven I imagine.
So, although it is not a Montessori school, I do like what they have to offer. Other pluses are that the kids don't have to wear a ridiculous (and expensive) uniform. They have shorts and t-shirt and a smock plus a class cap. The bus will come and pick him up and drop him off at the door, which is fab since I don't drive and it is about 15 mins away by car. I also saw no character goods apart from a giant stuffed Moomin in the library. Some of the kindy's here think that is a selling point so the yard is full of Anpanman slides and the such. The priest is rumoured to be quite strict and with it being a Shinto shrine there is respect for all living things, kids are expected to thank the garden god and the animal god every morning.
We are not a religious family but having my child taught about respect is not a bad thing in my opinion. Needless to say, Ebi-kun is very excited about going, I think he is most excited about having friends to play with every day!
There are 3 other yochiens in the area, one has a tiny yard, so small that only 1 or 2 classes can play out at one time, another is the Anpanman kind of kindy and the third is the expensive, look we wear posh uniform type. Better hope we get in at the one we want, sign up is the start of next month!

stamping

Remember that big box of fabric I just received? Well inside was a pile of bleached fabric, apparently it was beached, ready to dye but I discovered that using my rubber stamps on it works really well, I had planned to just stamp a small section so I could use the fabric to make a thank you card, but I got a bit carried away....

Birthdays

I want to tell you about a lovely lady and her lovely bags. Jacqui is the lovely lady behind Mee A Bee and she makes the sweetest toddler bags (she makes other bags too but the toddler bags make it for me). Jacqui only uses the best Japanese 100% cotton and linens and tries to use fabrics which are printed with non-toxic inks. Each bag is sized just right for a little one and sport cute designs, you won't find any Pokemon or Peppa Pig! Jaqcui hails from New Zealand and now resides in Osaka with her husband and two boys. We met up in the summer and hit it off, we have so many things in common it is a shame we don't live closer - although, if we did maybe we wouldn't get as much done :o)

So the reason for this post? It is Mee A Bee's birthday this month, there will be all kinds of giveaways and offers, for starters, if you pop over to Kenzi Poo you can enter to win one of two cute bags alternatively keep an eye on Mee a Bee's blog to see what else will be happening. And I almost forgot, if you are in Sydney, you will be able to find Mee A Bee goods at Mathilda's market Novemeber 1st. Alternatively, you can pick something up from her Etsy store.

The new website...

Apart from space cadets, I have also been building a new website, jojoebi designs (thank you Emma for your help). Pop over and have a look, if you find any broken links, mistakes or anything else that doesn't work/look right please let me know.
thank you!

And...the Serenity Mermaid Pattern is now available as a printed pattern rather than a PDF

FREE SHIPPING for her too, just put FREE DOLL SHIPPING in the message to seller box I will gladly refund the shipping for you.

The Organic Space Cadets have landed....

Boys have it rough, girls get all the cute stuff. Just walk into any kids store and the amount of cool things for girls completely out weighs the boys goods. And being a mom of a little boy, I know boys need someone to cuddle as much as a girl (in fact, I suspect that boys are actually more cuddly that girls). So, the last couple of months I have been beavering away on this project, making proto types, re-making proto types, sizing and re-sizing until I was finally happy with the results.

Once I was happy they went off to the testers, a special thank you to Jackie and Kim for all their help. Each pack comes with the doll pieces and easy to follow instructions. Just pin, sew, cut and stuff - simple! I don't include the stuffing - Why not? you ask. Well, I have yet to find a supplier of organic stuffing who sell it at a reasonable price for to me include it, it would bump up the costs considerably if I included at the moment. The other thing is, many people buy organic softies because of the child's allergies and although organic stuffing is usually better some people still suffer with natural stuffing such as wool. I have included some links at the bottom of the post for stuffing suppliers.
Unlike many printed dolls on the market, these little guys have printed backs too, they look cool which ever way you look at them.
They have, or course been tested for size and cuddle-ability and passed with flying colours. The finished doll stands approximately 16" high.
The fabric used is certified organic cotton by Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS). The fabric is printed with water based pigments rather that reactive or acid dyes, making the process more eco friendly. The fixing process requires only heat so the fabric needs no water at all and very few chemicals. The doll pieces are washed to remove any trace of chemicals before they are packed.
They are available in my Etsy shop or on my new website, remember to tell me which colour you want and if you buy before the end of the month and put FREE DOLL SHIPPING* in the message to seller box I will gladly refund the shipping for you.

I am more than happy to have wholesale orders, drop me a line for wholesale information and costs.
